    About the Artist

    Chinese pianist XIAOHUI YANG has been featured as a soloist and chamber musician in

    performances throughout Asia and North America, in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the

    Seoul Arts Center. Recent engagements include concerto performances with the Louisiana

    Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony, Curtis Symphony, and Milwaukee Symphony

    Orchestras, and her competition prizes include awards from the New Orleans International

    Piano Competition, the American Protégé International Competition, the Piano Arts

    Competition, the Hong Kong Piano Open Competition, and the International Chopin Piano

    Competition in Asia.

    A dedicated chamber musician, Xiaohui has attended such festivals as

    Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, the Tanglewood Music Center, the Taos School of Music,

    the Beijing International Music Festival and Academy, and the Mannes Beethoven Institute.

    Highlights of this season include a residency at the Marlboro Festival, concerts with the

    Louisiana Philharmonic, chamber music recitals at the Caramoor Festival and in New

    Orleans, besides a US tour with Ravinia's Steans Institute musicians.

    Born in the Chinese town of Liaoning, Xiaohui first studied at the Attached Music School of

    the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, where she was a pupil of Danwen Wei, Xianwei Cheng

    and Rosemary Platt. She moved to the United States in 2008 to attend the Curtis Institute of

    Music, where she studied with Ignat Solzhenitsyn and was recipient of the Michael and

    Cecilia lacovella Capuzzi Memorial Fellowship. Upon earning her bachelor's degree in 2013,

    Xiaohui was awarded Curtis's Festorazzi Prize for the best graduating piano student and was

    also selected for the Curtis On Tour performances in the United States and Korea. In 2015,

    Xiaohui earned her master’s degree at The Juilliard School as a recipient of the Cecilia

    Felman Piano Scholarship and pupil of Robert McDonald.

    In addition to her studies at Curtis and Juilliard, Xiaohui has worked with such artists as Leon

    Fleisher, Menahem Pressler, Seymour Lipkin, Emanuel Ax, Peter Serkin, Jerome Lowenthal,

    Gary Graffman, Richard Goode, Jonathan Biss. Currently, Xiaohui lives in Baltimore, where

    she is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at the Peabody Conservatory, under the tutelage of

    Boris Slutsky.

    About the Artist: New Orleans-based pianist Peter Collins holds the distinction of Professor Emeritus from Missouri State University where he taught and served as coordinator of the keyboard area for twenty-five years.  He began his formal piano studies in New Orleans with Melvin Alford and received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory under the instruction of Lillian Freundlich.  After winning awards in several piano competitions (the Washington International Piano Competition, the University of Maryland International Piano Competition, the American Chopin Competition, the American Beethoven Foundation) he received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The University of Michigan as a student of Louis Nagel.  He has served on the faculties of the Interlochen Arts Academy, the Missouri Fine Arts Academy and the Bösendorfer International Piano Academy in Vienna. 

    Peter Collins has performed  a wide variety of repertoire ranging from the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven and Mozart to recently composed works.  At Missouri State University, he originated the Missouri Chamber Players and toured Scandinavia three times with members of the ensemble in concerts of music by American composers.  His important European appearances also include solo performances at the Chopin Academy of Music (Warsaw) and the Liszt Academy of Music (Budapest).  As a concerto soloist he has collaborated with the Polish State Orchestra (Jelenia Góra), the Florida State Orchestra, the New Orleans Symphony, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Springfield Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra of the Ozarks.  Peter Collins has completed nine compact-disc recording projects (for the Albany, MSR and Centaur labels) featuring works of living American composers, music by women composers, original arrangements and transcriptions and piano music of nineteenth-century New Orleans.  He has performed regularly in the city since 1980 and has been heard in many of the area’s universities and recital venues as well as on New Orleans public radio and television.

    The annual New Orleans Piano Institute (NOPI), running concurrently with New Orleans Keyboard Festival, invites talented college, high school, and junior high pianists from across the United States and around the world to New Orleans for a week of intense study with world-renowned faculty as well as performance and competition opportunities. Celebrating its 20th year, the New Orleans Piano Institute continues to be a top internationally-regarded program of its kind.

    Additionally, all NOPI master classes, student performances and competitions are open to the public and free of charge to attend.
